![]() My WIFI network speeds limit what I can do from my MacBook Pro, but I can also access the NAS over the network, which is a big benefit over the Drobo, which had to be plugged into one machine. ![]() I decided to buy a Synology NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive, which is more a server than just a hard drive, and I also bought a 10Gbps switching hub so that the information between my iMac and my Synology drive would be as fast as possible, and importantly, faster than my Drobo drives over Thunderbolt. This amount of data takes years to accumulate, and although there may have been a way to have them restore my data from a backup, I decided that I would look for an alternative cloud backup at the same time as figuring out my new local storage strategy. I thought that would work until I returned to my computer the following morning, with still lots of data to restore, and I found Backblaze had unpaused itself and deleted almost 20TB of data from my cloud backup. Before I started this process, I paused my Backblaze cloud backup because I didn’t want it to see my Drobo with no data and remove files from my cloud backup. The technical problem caused me to reformat my main Drobo, but as I have always ironically kept a backup of my Drobo to a second Drobo, I could restore all of my data. Unquestionably the worst cloud sync/backup service I've used in 15+ years.Ĭons: Slow to non-existent upload speeds. You may remember that at the end of 2022, I decided to dump my Drobo drives, due to problems I was having with them and a lack of confidence in Drobo as a company, in light of their many bankruptcy reports and half-baked takeover attempts. Overall: My experience with these guys has been pretty awful. Features: Easy to use and fully featured online backup service. IDrive does real-time automatic data backups for multiple devices from one single account. It also offers a syncing feature that’s as easy as drag-and-drop, and file restoration for up to 30 previous file versions. Share your files with family and friends by automatically emailing out links. ![]() In other words, its a thorough online backup service perfect for business and personal users alike. Automatically backs up the most common folders where important. Since then it's managed to upload approximately 10,000 of my 90,000+ files. I've spent numerous hours reading their FAQ, watching videos, tweaking my computer parameters, etc and it's been massively frustrating and mostly a waste of time. They offer iDrive Express service, where you load your data onto a hard drive, but the postage charge for this - if you're in Europe, as I am - is 40+ dollars ONE WAY, so we're looking at 80 bucks postage alone, and, based on the rubbish service I've received so far, it didn't seem wise to throw more money away. ![]() I've chatted with customer service many times and at the end they'll assure me, "No, everything's fine now, it'll all sync no problem". I go to bed and when I check the next morning nothing's changed. IDrive is an online backup service available to Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android users. When the sync eventually starts working, it operates at speeds so slow that it'll take about 6 more weeks, operating 24/7, for less than 400gb to upload.Īvoid this terrible service. Once installed, users select folders and files to be backed up at user-specified times.
